Based in DunLaoghaire, the RIYC was founded in 1831, and is host to the oldest one-design boat in the world, known as the Water Wag. The concept of a “one-design” was introduced by a group of gentlemen who, in 1886, commissioned a number of identical boats for racing. Originally based on a Norse “Pram”, the present boat is a modified design from 1898. The Water Wags Association maintains the continuity of the class by buying boats and restricting the sale of them to enthusiasts who will sail and maintain them properly. The association holds historical information and plans on the boats and oversees the compliance of new boats to the specification. There are currently around 30 boats in commission. A written history of the class is available. The club is also home to several other classic designs including Dragons and Mermaids. The club has a library and archive, (past members include the Duke of Wellington, Daniel O’Connell and Sir Thomas Lipton).
