Killybegs Maritime & Heritage Centre is located in The Carpet Factory, Fintra Road, Killybegs (county of Donegal)
Position on map:
Small Heritage Centre based in the old Donegal Carpets factory. Has a dual focus on the towns two traditional industries, Fishing / Boat Building and Carpet making. Two audiovisual (DVD based) presentations, one on the marine heritage, the other on the carpet making. The marine presentation follows local history from the founding of the boatbuilding and fishing industrial school (modelled on the similar institution in Baltimore, Co. Cork), through development of local boats and methods suited to the local fishing environment, to the advent of the EU and the “Supertrawlers”, right up to the sale of the “Atlantic Challenger”, seen as a strong indication of the decline of the Irish fishing industry. Photographs, Knot Boards. Large reconstruction of a modern trawler bridge, with older electronics on display (radar, sounder, radio etc). The building also houses several old carpet-making looms, including the longest carpet loom in the world. The organisers are building a collection of artifacts, and hope to have interchangeable displays.
