Kilmallock was one of Munster’s most important medieval towns and not far away there is evidence of even earlier activity. The excavations at Tankardstown uncovered an early farming settlement dated around 4000BC. Kilmallock Museum has scale models of the Stone Age dwellings excavated and a model of medieval Killmallock, displaying its old town walls. During the Irish Civil War, the Kilmallock area saw fierce fighting, a period covered by the Kilmallock Museum exhibits. Other exhibits look at the industria,l rural and social heritage of the area. Kilmallock is the resting place of the great Gaelic poet Aindrias Mac Craith or, to use his pen name, Mangaire Sugach. A recording of his most famous poem Slán le Maigh, set to music, can be heard at the Kilmallock Museum.
