The building as it stands today dates from 1785. The estate was purchased by the Conynghams in 1701 after the lands were forfeited by the old owners, the Flemings in 1641. It remains in the Conyngham family up to the present day. In 1991 much of the castle was severely damaged by fire, but it has been fully restored by Lord Henry Mount Charles.
