Purteen Harbour is located in Gubalennaun Beg, Achill (county of Mayo)

One of the few sheltered harbours on Achill Island, this harbour was the site of the last shark fishery in Ireland, which continued until the 1970’s. Some land based equipment associated with the shark fishing remains, including shark oil storage tanks. Around a dozen currachs are kept in the harbour, some in cuts in the turf banks, (reminiscent of Norse style Nausts)
