Although the administrative area of South Dublin County came into existence as recently as 1994, the area it serves has a rich and varied history. Man has inhabited this area since Neolithic times and there is evidence of habitation throughout the major eras of history. In order to serve users who wish to study the development of South Dublin County and its rich history and heritage, the Local Studies Section at the County Library is dedicated to collecting, preserving and making available for reference, material relating to the history and development of South Dublin County. The collection includes over 10,000 items including books, newspapers, periodicals, maps, photographs, prints, ephemera and audio-visual material.
