Established in 1854 by an Act of Parliament, the National Gallery of Ireland houses the nation’s collection of European and Irish fine art spanning the early Renaissance to the 1950s. The collection comprises over 14,500 works of art. In essence the collection constitutes a survey of the history of European art from the 13th century to the present day, featuring celebrated masterpieces by Fra Angelico, Mantegna, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Hogarth, Vermeer, Goya, Velazquez, Metsu, Poussin, Monet, Renoir, Picasso and Gris. The NGI holds the most important collection of Irish painting dating from 17th century which includes works by James Barry, Thomas Roberts, Daniel Maclise, Walter Osborne, William Orpen, John Lavery, Mary Swanzy, Paul Henry, Jack B. Yeats, Louis le Brocquy and Patrick Scott. The National Gallery of Ireland is also home to the National Portrait Collection (established 1874). Over the years the collection has been developed with additions of paintings, drawings, watercolours and sculpture depicting eminent Irish individuals who have contributed to the civic, social, and cultural life of the nation. Since 1998 the National Portrait Collection has been enhanced by commissioned works which reflect both a more contemporary engagement with the affairs of the nation and a broader range of subjects. Among the highlights in the contemporary portrait series are: Mary and Nicholas Robinson by Mark Shields; Ronnie Delany by James Hanley RHA; Bono by Louis le Brocquy, Maeve Binchy by Maeve McCarthy RHA; Brian Friel by Mick O’Dea RHA; Michael Longley by Belfast born artist, Colin Davidson; and photographic portraits of Seamus Heaney by Jackie Nickerson; Bob Geldof, Brian O’Driscoll and Olwene Fouere, by Kevin Abosch.
