The Heritage Boat Association is an umbrella organisation for around 50 barge owners, with boats made up of B, E and M type, Lagan lighters and Gunnes Barges. They produce a newsletter, distribute information and encourage restoration and the continuation of the historic barges. The Association has a database of existing boats along with information on and histories of the barges. The members form a great community of knowledge on the location and condition of historic boats, including those abandoned on the inland waterways. Most of the boats can be seen moored or in use along the network of inland waterways (and are thus publically accessible). The HBA also has a collection of Bollinger Engines (a traditional barge engine) in storage. Recently the HBA has published a history of nearly 80 trading craft of Ireland, entitled “Cold Metal, Clear Water”. The HBA have obtained copyright to use the “Shortall” collection of waterways photographs.
